Social Engagement Specialist, National Stigma Initiative (Remote, NY or DC preferred)


Shatterproof was founded in 2013 to fill the gap for a well-funded, national, coordinated effort to reverse the course of the addiction health crisis, with the singular goal of ending the devastation addiction is causing our families. To achieve this, Shatterproof has identified three priority pillars: revolutionizing the treatment system, breaking down addiction-related stigma, and supporting and empowering our communities.

Recognizing the gap in stigma reduction efforts across the nation, Shatterproof has quickly become a leader in the space. In 2020, Shatterproof launched a national movement to End Addiction Stigma to address this gap and catalyze efforts to reduce addiction-related stigmas. In January 2021, Shatterproof hosted a virtual panel during the historic National Day of Service, at the request of the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Additionally, in June, Shatterproof was a founding partner in delivering the inaugural Stigma of Addiction summit. The summit brought together leading experts from universities, health systems, nonprofit organizations, and governments as presenters and speakers, and over 4,500 participants registered to attend.

Based on extensive interviews, literature reviews, and case studies, we believe that effectively addressing stigma is a critical, cutting-edge component of combatting this crisis–and every individual and institution in the U.S. has an important role to play. Accordingly, Shatterproof has identified six systems that will have the largest impact on those with substance use disorder (SUD): employers, healthcare, government, criminal justice, media & entertainment, and local communities. Currently, Shatterproof is a critical actor in Pennsylvania’s statewide opioid use disorder (OUD) stigma reduction campaign and will be launching efforts in Colorado and Kentucky in early 2022. Shatterproof forecast continued expansion of our efforts across the United States and is working to bring more components of the campaign in house as we reach economies of scale. Thus, the National Stigma Initiative is looking to onboard a Social Engagement Specialist to be a key member of our growing state-based work.


The Social Engagement Specialist will create, grow, and manage the social media strategy of two statewide stigma reduction campaigns, with the potential for additional state campaigns to be added to their portfolio. This newly created position will oversee and make strategic recommendations to place paid media advertisements to increase engagement using digital geo-targeting. The specialist will be responsible for creating compelling content and fostering engagement across a subset of social media channels (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for each state initiative. Additionally, they will be responsible for the tracking of engagement metrics and will be expected to contribute to reporting requirements as dictated by the contract with the state. The successful candidate will be comfortable in a fast-paced environment, able to juggle multiple priorities and competing deadlines, and is an effective collaborator. This person is experienced in social media paid and organic strategy and execution with a demonstrated track record of managing social media campaigns, overseeing paid media budgets, and executing geotargeting advertising. The day-to-day of this position will entail the creation of digital content, regular distribution of content on social media platforms through free and paid strategies, and close collaboration with the Director, National Stigma Initiative to strategize and continuously improve to reach agreed upon key performance indicators (KPIs) for each respective state campaign. 

This position will report to the Director, National Stigma Initiative who is leading state-based campaigns. This person will be an individual contributor, with no direct reports. There is a strong preference for this position to be based in New York City or D.C., but we encourage all qualified candidates to apply. If outside of the D.C. area, there is an expectation for quarterly travel for team retreats.


Social Media Management

  • Create social channels (i.e., Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) for respective state campaigns;
  • Build an effective social engagement content strategy to build an engaged following on all social channels for each state campaign;
  • Build a social media content calendar for each state initiative, with the ability to remain flexible to quickly adapt and accommodate time-sensitive requests;
  • Design and develop digital content that maintains branding identity of state campaigns and achieves the marketing objectives set forth to ultimately shift attitudes, knowledge, and behavior around addiction stigma;
  • Develop, monitor and report on KPIs regularly to utilize learnings for continuous improvement; and
  • Collaborate with Shatterproof Social Media Manager who oversees Shatterproof Masterbrand social channels.

Paid Media Strategy and Execution

  • Manage social media budget and make data-driven recommendations to inform paid media strategy in close collaboration with Stigma leadership;
  • Execute paid digital media campaigns across paid social platforms and search;
  • Assist the Director, National Stigma Initiative as we strive to maximize economies of scale by creating and standardizing processes, when possible, to create capacity for the Stigma team;
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for paid media strategy for stigma reduction efforts, advise stigma leadership and external partners, as needed, and effectively articulate the paid media components of the campaign to stakeholders;
  • Serve as point of contact and manage partner relationships as they relate to the expertise of this role; and
  • Monitor social media trends, including developments in design, applications, strategy, and innovation to stay relevant.

Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned by Director, National Stigma Initiative.


The ideal candidate qualifications include: 

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years of experience successfully managing social media platforms for a significant, high-profile organization such as a major non-profit entity, campaign, or public corporation/brand
  • Expertise in third-party paid media, digital marketing, and analytics platforms with a minimum of 2 years of professional experience with a track record of increasing responsibility overseeing marketing budgets
  • Demonstrated expertise devising social media strategies, implementing campaigns, tracking performance, and scaling high-performing initiatives
  • Strong analytical skills with an ability to interpret data via Google, Facebook, etc. to improve the campaign and constantly iterate our approach to ensure superior results
  • Exceptional communication skills–written and verbal–with demonstrated ability to manage up, down, and across.
  • Strong organizational skills with a proven track record of supporting multiple projects concurrently with tight deadlines
  • Facebook Social Issue Ad Certification and/or Google Certification(s) strongly preferred 
  • English fluency required; Spanish strongly preferred 
  • Passion for Shatterproof’s mission is highly desired

The Crisis 
Addiction is the most significant health crisis in the United States today. 
For the 20.4 million adults in America with a substance use disorder (SUD), the devastation caused by the disease can be crushing. In 2018, more than 175,000 deaths in the U.S. were related to alcohol and other drugs – the third largest cause of death in the nation. Of those deaths, 47,000 were from an opioid overdose. The opioid crisis also cost society an estimated $179 billion to $696 billion in 2018 alone. These impacts are felt across a broad swath of society, from health care to employers to the government.  
Even more tragic, the social isolation and anxiety brought on by COVID-19 has made the addiction crisis that much worse. Addressing this health crisis is more important now than ever. Recent reporting indicates that overdoses in May 2020 were 42% higher than in May 2019.
