Our third 5K event of 2017 took place at the Catholic University of America on Saturday, October 21. It was a gorgeous fall morning and the perfect day to shatter the stigma of addiction.
Nearly 1,000 participants from all over the D.C. area created 66 teams, raised funds, and spread the word on social media. Their hard work definitely paid off with such an unforgettable event.
There were plenty of things for the runners and walkers to do and see as they began arriving at 8 AM. Some participants visited the Celebrate Recovery area, honoring their own or their loved ones' recovery milestones.
Others visited the Memorial Gallery, where families and friends shared quiet moments of reflection. They read the stories of those we've lost to addiction, and added their own contributions.
Teams came ready to shed light on addiction in matching t-shirts and shared hugs and smiles.
Many runners and walkers created special memorial lanyards and Why I Rise Up bibs to wear throughout the day.
At 9 AM, our morning program kicked off with an excellent round of speakers, including Shatterproof Ambassador Shelly Modes, who candidly talked about how she and her family are on the path to recovery and how Shatterproof has given her family inspiration and hope.
Our other morning speakers included:
After remarks wrapped up, the 5K officially began with participants excitedly walking (or running) across the Catholic University of America’s gorgeous campus grounds.
Our wonderful volunteers cheered participants on along the 5K route and were full of encouragement.
Many children came out to share in such an inspiring day too!
As the 5K came to an end, participants and supporters were full of hoorays and hope.
Together, our passionate 5K participants raised over $310,000! Those funds will help so many families receive the support and evidence-based resources they so desperately need.
The 5K Run/Walk heads to Boston and Atlanta next — and we're adding lots more cities for 2018. Register for a walk near you, and be sure to join our email list to be the first to find out next year's 5K locations!
