Thank You, NYC! Highlights From our 5K Run/Walk
Our second 5K event of 2017 took place at NYC's Pier 84 on Sunday, October 1. It was a beautiful, sun-drenched morning—the perfect day to bring the disease of addiction into the light.
More than 2,250 participants created 146 teams, raised funds, and spread the word on social media. And on October 1, all that hard work paid off with an incredible event.
Runners and walkers began arriving at 8 AM—there were plenty of things to see and do before the 5K race began!
Participants visited the Celebrate Recovery area, honoring their own or their loved ones' recovery milestones.
At the Memorial Gallery, families and friends shared quiet moments of reflection. They read the stories of those we've lost to addiction, and added their own contributions.
Teams met up in their team tents—snapping photos, sharing hugs, and suiting up in awesome matching t-shirts.
Many runners and walkers created special memorial lanyards and Why I Rise Up bibs and to wear throughout the day.
At 9 AM, the opening ceremonies kicked off with passionate words (and plenty of laughs) from our emcee, NBC New York's Dave Price.
Our morning program included these speakers:
- Dr. Paul Sethi, Plan Against Pain
- Patsy Doerr, Global Head of Corporate Responsibility and Inclusion, Thomson Reuters
- Gary Mendell, Founder & CEO, Shatterproof
- Geoff Ballotti, President & CEO, Wyndham Hotel Group
- Michele Abreu, Shatterproof Ambassador
They talked to the crowd about the importance of erasing stigma and reigning in our country's opioid epidemic. And Dave rallied supporters to sign our petition to the President, demanding an official declaration of a national emergency.
After remarks wrapped up, it was go-time for runners and walkers!
Volunteers and spectators kept participants fired up all along the beautiful waterfront route.
Uniting at the finish line after the race, supporters shared high fives, hoorays, and plenty more hugs.
Together, our passionate 5K participants raised over $572,000—surpassing our goal! Those funds will help so many families receive the support and evidence-based resources that they so desperately need.
The 5K Run/Walk is coming to Boston, D.C., and Atlanta in the coming months—and we're adding lots more cities for 2018. Register for a walk near you, and be sure to join our email list to be the first to find out next year's 5K locations!
