WASHINGTON, DC – Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on President Trump’s budget proposal released today that includes $13 billion over the next two years for the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to fight the opioid crisis:

“The opioid crisis is the largest public health crisis that this country has ever faced. This budget allocation is a step in the right direction, but there is no question that more needs to be done to save lives. We need to take a holistic approach to address this crisis and make sure that all Americans have access to treatment. While I’m glad that the proposal requires Medicaid to cover medication-assisted treatment (MAT), its overall weakening of the Medicaid and Medicare programs will hurt Americans struggling to overcome substance use disorders. I am also disappointed by the massive cuts proposed to the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP).

“I hope the administration starts to implement the recommendations that the President’s Commission released last year, and continues to work with experts and advocates to maximize the use of funds for evidenced-based prevention, treatment and recovery programs.”
