Decades of research prove that addiction can be treated with the same effectiveness as other chronic diseases, like diabetes or hypertension. But unlike these other conditions, addiction is heavily stigmatized, and the quality of addiction treatment programs across the United States varies widely.
While some programs offer evidenced-based and clinically effective medical treatment, others employ tactics based on folklore, beliefs, or ineffective and outdated methodologies. Tragically for those seeking care, it is nearly impossible to sort the high-quality programs from those that may do more harm than good.
Right now, there’s more concrete information available about what type of refrigerator to buy than there is about where to send a loved one for addiction treatment. That’s got to change.
Shatterproof’s Rating System for Addiction Treatment Programs will cut through the confusion for families, delivering trustworthy, standardized information about the levels of care offered at all types of treatment centers, plus insight into the quality of care offered at that facility. The system will be easy to use and free for consumers to access.
This system will also drive improvement among treatment programs. By increasing accountability and transparency, it will motivate and equip providers to adopt best practices, while supplying payers and states with the information necessary to reward high-quality care.
Our approach to this system builds on best practices used by rating websites in healthcare and other industries and will provide reliable and valid information in a user-friendly way. This $5 million project is funded with support from the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and a group of health care companies (Aetna, a CVS Health business, Anthem, Inc., Beacon Health Options, Cigna, Magellan Health, and UnitedHealth Group) who are dedicated to improving this broken system.
Every patient with addiction deserves the opportunity to recover. Shatterproof’s Rating System for Addiction Treatment Programs will help every patient make an informed decision about where to access the care they need in order to live a happy, healthy life.
