Shatterproof took its national movement, the Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run event, to the National Capital Area on October 20, 2018. The bright fall morning brought over 1,300 people from the community to the Reston Town Area to shatter the stigma of addiction and help transform treatment in America. Participants arrived early and ready to celebrate recovery, honor lost loved ones, and walk or run 5 kilometers.
Teams wore their matching t-shirts with pride and gathered to take selfies and pose in front of the Celebrate Recovery Wall.
Many families and friends stopped by the Memorial Gallery to read about their loved ones lost to addiction and add their own contributions.
Supporters also stopped by the Community Village to collect resources from several local organizations at the event. These groups are doing important work throughout the National Capital Area community to help families devastated by addiction.
Families also stopped by the Kids Zone, sponsored by Metro Offices, where children enjoyed face painting, balloon artists, and glitter tattoos. It was definitely a highlight for some of our pint-sized 5K participants!
Several participants visited the Salute to Heroes area, sponsored by CACI, which featured a tent and breakfast to honor first responders, veterans, members of the armed services and their families.
The Fairfax County's Fire & Rescue Department parked a firetruck on site for kids and participants to sit in. The department’s first responders also interacted with attendees and took photos. Every day, the men and women of the Fairfax County fire department are in the field saving lives in the community. They wanted to be part of the Shatterproof 5K Walk/Run to save lives another way – by helping to change the conversation about addiction.
Several companies sponsored the event, and we’re grateful for all their support and their commitment to saving lives by working with Shatterproof to put an end to the disease of addiction: Alkermes and Pacira – Plan Against Pain, Cigna, Adapt Pharma – Narcan Nasal Spray, Choice Hotels, Chubb, Dave & Buster’s, JP Morgan Chase, Kaleo, Lockton, Vineyard Vines, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, Indivior, Team Faktorow, UnitedHealth Group, JBG Smith, CBRE, Atlantic Realty, Carr Properties, Clyde’s Restaurant Group, Inova, The Meridian Group, Fairfax Oral Surgery, Metro Offices (Kids Zone), CACI (Salute to Heroes), Washingtonian (Exclusive Magazine), Clyde Group, DJ Dave, DMV Weather, and iHeartMedia.
Around 9 a.m., Gale Ott, a Shatterproof Ambassador, and 2019 Mrs. Loudoun County, who served as the event emcees, got the crowd excited and ready for the speakers, which included Attorney General of Virginia, Mark Herring; Dr. Martin Rosenzweig, Behavioral Chief Medical Officer, Optum; Nick Reuter, Director of Treatment and Health Policy for Indivior; Rob Faktorow, NCA Shatterproof 5K Walk/Run event chair; and Gary Mendell, founder and CEO of Shatterproof.
The 5K portion of the event began at 9:30 a.m., with some members of the community walking and some running the 3.1 miles, but all crossing the finish line with the same goal in mind – rising up against addiction.
The National Capital Area community raised over $334,000 for the Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run event, which will support Shatterproof’s work to transform our nation’s broken addiction treatment system and ensure that every American with a substance use disorder has access to treatment that’s based on proven research.
