On February 2, 2017, I lost my mother to opioid addiction. A few months later, even though I was still grieving, I registered for the Shatterproof Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Run/Walk in Kansas City. Through fundraising for the Shatterproof 5K, I was able to share my story with others and give them hope. It also motivated me to educate people about Shatterproof so they could support the organization too.
On the morning of the event I was very nervous and didn’t know what to expect. But once I got there with my loved ones, the Shatterproof staff and volunteers were very welcoming and comforting.
During the 5K, I met other families just like mine. That was the best part of the day. I no longer felt alone. I realized that we’re all in this together. It was amazing to feel all the support from family, friends, and even strangers. It was a great experience because everyone pulled together and it really helped with my grieving process.
I loved the Shatterproof 5K experience. I met wonderful people and heard inspiring stories of healing and courage. People honored their loved ones and connected with other families at the Memorial Gallery or shared their personal recovery milestone at the Celebrate Recovery area.
It was truly an unforgettable day for me.
