Shatterproof Statement on Government Shutdown

Washington, D.C. — October 7 — Shatterproof, a national nonprofit dedicated to addressing the addiction crisis in the U.S., believes addiction is a nonpartisan issue that affects every community in America. As the federal government shutdown continues, we urge Congress to come together swiftly to ensure there are no lapses in care, coverage, or access to life-saving services for the over 48 million Americans living with substance use disorder.
Critical emergency resources remain available — including the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, FindTreatment.gov, and ongoing patient care. Yet if the shutdown continues, millions of Americans who rely on federally subsidized health coverage could face uncertainty or loss of affordable access to care. Prolonged disruptions also threaten essential research and innovation — including the work of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) and other agencies advancing the science of prevention and recovery.
Addiction does not pause during political gridlock. Drug overdose and alcohol-related deaths are the #1 cause of death among people age 18-45. Continuity of care and coverage must remain a shared priority to protect lives and sustain recovery across the nation.
