Shatterproof Responds to Federal Termination of Addiction and Mental Health Grants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Washington, D.C. — January 14, 2026 — It has been reported in several media outlets that yesterday, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sent hundreds of termination letters to organizations receiving federal grant funding for addiction, recovery, and mental health services.  The administration immediately canceled grants totaling as much as $2 billion that do not align with the agency’s priorities.  These cuts could potentially impact thousands of community-based programs that provide lifesaving addiction services across the country.

Recently, the United States has seen encouraging signs of progress in reducing overdose deaths. This progress reflects sustained investment in treatment, overdose prevention, recovery supports, and community-based services. While there is still significant work to be done, these trends demonstrate that coordinated, evidence-based approaches can save lives.

Cancelling this funding creates uncertainty for organizations that provide essential addiction and mental health services in communities across the country.

“Organizations on the ground are doing the work every day to support people, families, and communities affected by substance use disorders,” said Kevin Roy, Chief Policy Officer at Shatterproof. “These organizations understand the needs of the populations they serve and play a critical role in expanding access to care, preventing overdose, and supporting long-term recovery.”

Shatterproof believes that continued progress in addressing the addiction crisis depends on stable investment, collaboration with community partners, and a shared commitment to evidence-based care. Disruptions to funding risk slowing momentum at a time when communities are beginning to see meaningful improvements.
