Shatterproof to Continue Its National Campaign to End the Stigma of Addiction

BOSTON — Shatterproof is a national nonprofit organization and a leader in improving the way the healthcare system addresses and treats substance use disorder. On Saturday, October 5, Shatterproof will host its annual walk for the Boston community to honor those who lost their lives to this medical condition, celebrate those who are living in recovery and bring hope to the millions that are still navigating the complexities of addiction.

The Shatterproof Walk is an opportunity for people to gather without shame or judgment and create a national support system for anyone impacted by substance use. Participants will unite to engage in several activities geared toward ending the stigma associated with substance use disorder. Additionally, Shatterproof has a program in Massachusetts called Shatterproof Treatment Atlas that is free and confidential that allows people to search for quality and appropriate treatment and search by various criteria, including, insurance, payment and severity of the substance use disorder.

The walk is the largest grassroots event for people living with substance use disorder or those that have lost loved ones. Funds raised from the Shatterproof Walk will support the work of Shatterproof in advocating for changes in federal and state policy as well as programming focused on saving lives and changing the conversation about addiction. Highlights of the event include:

  • The Shatterproof Community Resource Village, showcasing resources from local organizations.
  • Remembering With You, featuring an area dedicated to honor the memory of lost loved ones.
  • Celebrating With You, an interactive space to unite and celebrate with others in recovery.
  • Participants will be able to select a bracelet that speaks to them personally to represent why they are participating in the Shatterproof Walk to End Addiction Stigma - whether it be in memorial of a loved one, for themselves in recovery, or to show their support to those who live with the disease.
  • An opening ceremony profiling local walkers touched by addiction and recognition of top teams, fundraisers and leading event sponsors.
