An executive order will finally create a PDMP in the state.
JEFFERSON CITY, MO – Missouri Governor Eric Greitens signed an executive order today creating a prescription drug monitoring program (PDMP) in the state, making Missouri the 50th state to enact one. Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on the news:
“Missouri is no longer the only state without a PDMP – a prescription drug monitoring program that slows the flow of opioids into the cabinets of Missourians. I am grateful that Governor Eric Greitens intervened when the Missouri state legislature failed to acknowledge for many years in the past: that PDMPs save lives.
“Shatterproof worked alongside many dedicated advocates for years, whose hard work and dedication made today possible. Chief among them is State Rep. Holly Rehder, who has fought tirelessly for a PDMP. When legislative efforts failed, PDMP supporters successfully went to the Governor’s office and led to today’s progress. I want to thank each and every one of them for their commitment to this fight.
“PDMPs are an important piece of the broader fight against substance use disorder and helps prevent patients from becoming hooked on prescription opioids. However, state and local governments cannot stop at prevention. It is equally important to provide treatment resources to those who are already facing addiction. I hope the Missouri government continues to take the necessary steps to address this deadly epidemic and save more Missourians’ lives.”
Shatterproof supported the PDMP fight in Missouri this year and previously released a report on the benefits of titled “Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs: Critical Elements of Effective State Legislation.” The report can be viewed online here.
