WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Senate passed legislation that would offer incentives to behavioral health providers who adopt electronic health records (EHR). The Improving Access to Behavioral Health Information Technology Act, introduced by Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) and Rob Portman (R-OH) will now advance to the House, where Representatives Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) and Doris Matsui (D-CA) have introduced a companion bill slated for consideration at the House Energy & Commerce Committee markup on May 9. Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell issued the following statement in response:

“I applaud Senator Whitehouse and Senator Portman for their leadership in passing this important legislation. Too many of our loved ones are prescribed drugs by doctors who mean well, but don’t know the patient’s full prescription history. If passed by Congress, this bill would take a meaningful first step toward providing incentive payments for behavioral health providers to adopt electronic health records. These providers never should have been left out of the original EHR incentive payments in 2011, and I am encouraged to see congressional action to fix this problem. We urge members to adopt this bill during the House Energy & Commerce Committee markup on Wednesday, as it will help save lives immediately.”
