The U.S. Senate rejected its “skinny repeal” bill that would have overturned critical parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
WASHINGTON, DC – Early this morning, the U.S. Senate rejected its “skinny repeal” bill that would have overturned critical parts of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on the news:
“Rather than continuing down a futile path to take healthcare away from millions of Americans, I once again call upon members from both parties to work together to fix the ACA and sufficiently fund treatment for people with substance use disorders. The opioid epidemic is devastating communities across the country and it is time for Congress to take strong, effective action.
“The most fundamental action that Congress must take to address this public health crisis is to approve ample federal funding for addiction treatment programs. While passing Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) last year was a significant step in the right direction, the lack of funds in the bill limited the positive effect it could have. More federal resources are necessary to save lives."
“I look forward to working with Members of Congress from both parties to find practical solutions to provide quality treatment and healthcare services to Americans. Millions of people with substance use disorders are depending on it.”
In addition to pursuing legislative solutions, Shatterproof and Mr. Mendell are also working with stakeholders on how to effectively address the lack of quality addiction treatment. In April, Mr. Mendell launched a Substance Use Disorder Treatment Task Force comprised of private and public payers, advocates and former government officials and will utilize a business approach to develop a private sector-oriented plan to implement the recommendations found in the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health.
Mr. Mendell spoke in front of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis at the White House in June to address the need for quality treatment.
