WASHINGTON, DC – Shatterproof, along with the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO), Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP), the National Safety Council (NSC) and the American College of Medical Toxicology (ACMT), today filed a petition requesting that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) remove ultra-high dosage opioids from the market. The request would include the OxyContin 80mg tablet, which is equivalent to 24 regular strength Vicodin in one pill.
Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on the petition:
“The fact that ultra-high dosage opioids are still on the market is alarming. We know that higher opioid dosages are associated with increased overdose risk, and the harm of these products far outweigh their modest benefits.
“Patients can be compromised by using these opioids if they lack the tolerance or even if they accidently take just one extra dose. They also pose a risk to those misusing the drug for recreational purposes, and to young children who may consume the pills by mistake. They put patients at increased risk of developing an opioid use disorder, and increase the risk for motor vehicle accidents, immune suppressions, among others.
“The choice now is between maximizing our impact and defeating this epidemic or acquiescence and letting it consume us. That should be no choice at all. Ultra-high dosage opioids should be immediately removed from the market to prevent further harm to thousands of adults, adolescents and children, and help reverse risky prescribing practices that were previously encouraged.”
