“I’ve been an orthopedic surgeon in the Boston area for over 20 years and I continue to see the devastating impact opioids can have on patients struggling with addiction,” said Dr. Scott Sigman, board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Orthopedic Surgical Associates in Lowell. “Since surgery has become an inadvertent gateway to opioid addiction, it’s critical that patients and doctors discuss effective non-opioid options available for pain management. Through an open dialogue between the doctor and patient and the work of organizations like Shatterproof, we are hopeful that the reliance on opioids decreases in the years ahead.”
