[New York, NY – October 12, 2017] - Shatterproof, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to ending the devastation the disease of addiction causes families, will continue its national campaign, “Rise Up Against Addiction” in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, October 21 at The Catholic University of America. This event is part of Shatterproof’s “Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Run/Walk” series across the country, uniting local communities to support those who have lost a loved one to addiction and to celebrate those who are living in recovery today.

“At Shatterproof, we’re committed to igniting conversations around addiction in an effort to raise awareness and end the stigma around this disease,” said CEO & Founder of Shatterproof, Gary Mendell. “One in three people in the United States are affected by substance use disorder and we are excited to bring the Rise Up Against Addiction movement to D.C. to rally the community together and foster a sense of strength and support rather than shame.”

Participants are invited to register and run/walk 5 kilometers from The Catholic University of America to bring the disease of addiction into the forefront of a national conversation. Shatterproof CEO & Founder Gary Mendell will kick off the event with a speech at the beginning of the program, joined by elected officials, special guests, and local families impacted by this disease. Guests will have the opportunity to engage in activities geared towards bringing the community together and promoting positive change. Highlights include: THE SHATTERPROOF COMMUNITY VILLAGE, which showcases substance use disorder resources from local organizations; THE MEMORIAL GALLERY, featuring photos and stories of lost loved ones; a CELEBRATE RECOVERY space to unite with hundreds of others in recovery; and more.

“It is time to support this national health crisis and change the stigma of addiction.”, said Rob Faktorow, Vice Chairman, CBRE, and chair of the D.C. event. “I am grateful to be involved with Shatterproof and for the opportunity to take action and help towards a solution.”
