WASHINGTON, DC – In the last day, it has become clear that the U.S. Senate does not currently have the votes to pass the Better Care Reconciliation Act (BCRA) nor for a straight repeal bill of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on the news:

"Now that both chambers of Congress have failed to repeal and replace the ACA, it is incumbent upon both parties to come together and find a reasonable solution to make affordable, quality healthcare accessible to all Americans. The replacement bills introduced in the House and the Senate were severely insufficient to provide people battling substance use disorders with the care and treatment they so critically need.

“The quality of treatment is just as important as the accessibility of treatment. High-quality, effective treatment must be based on evidence-based research to lead people on the path to recovery. Treatment quality is especially important to me because if my son Brian had received care that was more tailored to his needs, he may still be alive today."

“I look forward to working with the experts in the Substance Use Disorder Treatment Task Force to come up with implementable solutions to address the opioid crisis in this country. Regardless of what Congress does or does not do on health care, Americans’ lives depend on access to higher quality substance use disorder treatment.”

Shatterproof and Mr. Mendell launched a Substance Use Disorder Treatment Task Force in April to address the lack of quality addiction treatment. The Task Force is comprised of private and public payers, advocates and former government officials and will utilize a business approach to develop a private sector-oriented plan to implement the recommendations found in the Surgeon General’s Report on Alcohol, Drugs, and Health.

Mr. Mendell also spoke in front of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis at the White House last month to address the need for quality treatment. To see Shatterproof’s full list of recommendations to the federal government, go here.
