We need robust goal-setting and reporting infrastructure in order effectively address the epidemic and drive accountability.

ATLANTA, GA – Shatterproof founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a new Vital Signs report today on opioid prescribing patterns nationally and by county:

"I want to thank the CDC for their leadership in providing this helpful information. However, we must now develop a robust goal-setting and reporting infrastructure in order effectively address the epidemic and drive local prescriber and state accountability.

“Accountability requires current data. We need prescribing data to be released every quarter for every state and county, within 30 days of the end of each quarter. This would quickly bring down the number of prescriptions to the proper balance of prescribed medications for those that need them, and eliminating those prescriptions made outside of the CDC recommendations.

“A large majority of illicit opioid users begin their path to addiction by using legally prescribed opioids. Current data will increase prescribers’ accountability and quickly decrease the number of unnecessarily prescribed opioid-based medicines. This would be an important step in saving more lives.”

Mr. Mendell presented this recommendation and others to the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Crisis last month at the White House. To see Shatterproof’s full list of recommendations to the federal government, go here.
