WASHINGTON, DC – Following the House Energy & Commerce Subcommittee on Health approval of multiple bills aiming to tackle the opioid epidemic, Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell issued the following statement in response.
“I’m encouraged by the progress that’s been made in Congress this week to fight the opioid epidemic. We welcome many of the bills approved by the Health Subcommittee, and in particular those that 1) provide incentive payments to behavioral health providers for adopting certified technology, 2) encourage best practices in emergency departments, and 3) allow for student loan forgiveness for substance use disorder professionals. As the package moves to the full committee markup stage, we urge members to consider these bills as part of a comprehensive opioid package that should also require states to meet minimum best practices for Prescription Drug Monitoring Programs (PDMPs) and incentivize evidence-based approaches to treating substance use disorders.”
