WASHINGTON, DC – Today, the Trump administration announced that they will allow states to enact Medicaid work requirements. Shatterproof Founder and CEO Gary Mendell released the following statement on the news:
“I’m disappointed that President Trump and his administration are allowing an action that will make the fight against addiction even harder. Medicaid provides essential health care and recovery treatment options to people with substance use disorders. When someone has a substance use disorder, they can have a hard time maintaining a job or finding work. Treatment covered by Medicaid, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and group recovery programs, help people get back on their feet and overcome the disorder. States that require work as a pre-condition for receiving Medicaid coverage will likely only hurt those people who can’t work and increase the stigma surrounding addiction, which is exactly the opposite of what our country needs. The President declared the opioid epidemic a ‘public health emergency’ last year, but policies like this will only make the crisis worse.”
