NEW YORK, NY– February 15, 2017 – Shatterproof, the leading nonprofit working to end the stigma and the devastation caused by the disease of addiction, has unveiled its new website today which will function as the premiere online resource for those affected by substance use disorder. Shatterproof.org has been developed in part with support from a $100,000 World of Difference grant from the Cigna Foundation and a $75,000 grant from the CVS Health Foundation. The website provides an expansive online resource for those who are seeking information about the disease of addiction, evidence-based prevention, treatment and recovery methods, and advocacy initiatives surrounding the disease.
“For every major disease in the U.S., there is one well-funded national organization that consolidates research and resources, providing the public with the most up-to-date, evidence-based information. Yet there was no such comprehensive one-stop resource for substance abuse disorder, a disease that is public health crisis affecting millions of Americans. Today, that has changed with Shatterproof’s web site which provides informational resources for people experiencing addiction and for their loved ones,’ said Gary Mendell. “We now have one centralized, accessible, and regularly updated online site to house a powerful body of information that will save lives and families.”
Shatterproof.org is a comprehensive online resource featuring the most up-to-date, evidence-based information on how to understand, prevent, treat, and recover from the disease of addiction. The site also provides access to a supportive community of those affected by substance use disorder.
“The Cigna Foundation is very proud to play a part in helping Shatterproof provide access to information. We believe this can save countless lives and reduce enormous human suffering in communities across the United States,” said David Figliuzzi, executive director of the Cigna Foundation.
After participating as the lead sponsor of the Shatterproof Challenge Rappel, the largest series of peer-to-peer events across the country dedicated to raising awareness of substance use disorder, the Cigna Foundation awarded the grant to Shatterproof in 2015. In 2017, Shatterproof will continue to host the Shatterproof Challenge Rappel in addition to a new event series, the Rise Up Against Addiction 5K in 5 cities.
"We are dedicated to helping the communities we serve address and prevent prescription drug abuse by supporting treatment, education and outreach as well as increasing awareness and opportunities for safe medication disposal,” said Eileen Howard Boone, senior vice president, Corporate Social Responsibility and Philanthropy, CVS Health and president of the CVS Health Foundation. “We are proud to support Shatterproof and believe this comprehensive information will be a valuable resource for anyone who has been touched by a substance use disorder.”
In addition to providing philanthropic support to help mitigate prescription drug abuse through the CVS Health Foundation, CVS Health has a longstanding, multi-pronged commitment to helping address the opioid abuse epidemic. CVS Pharmacy locations in 37 states can dispense the opioid overdose-reversal medication naloxone without a prescription. CVS Pharmacists also have the opportunity to participate in the company’s community outreach prevention program, PharmacistsTeach, which has educated more than 150,000 students about the dangers of drug abuse. And, the company has donated more than 600 medication disposal units to police departments across the country, collecting more than 47 metric tons of unwanted prescription drugs.
