The White House announced new opioid plan today.
WASHINGTON – Shatterproof CEO Gary Mendell welcomed the White House’s plan to combat substance use disorders announced today and urged the Administration and members of Congress to move quickly. The White House plan includes some of Mendell’s recommendations presented at a meeting of the President’s Commission on Combating Drug Addiction and the Opioid Epidemic last year, including focusing on evidence based treatment, strengthening prescription drug monitoring programs and expanding access to Naloxone.
“I’m excited to see President Trump and his administration finally take the first concrete steps to begin tackling the substance use crisis in America,” said Gary Mendell, CEO of Shatterproof. “This disease is preventable and treatable if we find the courage and determination to act on the solutions that we know will save lives. While I don’t agree with everything in today’s announcement, the White House plan does include several clear solutions to help people already addicted and to prevent addiction and drug misuse among others.”
Shatterproof supported the President’s public health emergency declaration and the strong initial recommendations released in October. The skyrocketing death rate from substance use shows that people are not getting adequate treatment to reduce the devastation of this disease. Drug overdoses killed roughly 64,000 Americans in 2016 and only one in 10 Americans battling addiction receives treatment.
“We must do better. When we fail to treat substance use disorders, people die and families are shattered,” added Mendell. "Our lawmakers need to act on the sound proposals announced today because there is no time to waste.”
