About Our Honorees

The Mitchell Family

The Mitchell family is known the world over for exceptional customer service, exquisite designer clothing, jewelry and accessories for men and women, and multi-generational relationships with designers and customers alike.

Mitchells had its humble beginning in 1958, when the original "Ed Mitchells" was founded by Ed and Norma Mitchell. They started a small store with three men’s suits on a pipe rack in Westport, Connecticut. As the business grew, their two sons Jack and Bill joined their parents.

Fast forward 60 years and the Mitchells have 8 stores across the country under the brands Mitchells, Richards, Wilkes Bashford, and Mario’s. Six of Ed’s grandsons are now running the business. They have continued Ed and Norma’s vision of giving back to their communities.

Like many families today, addiction has been part of the Mitchell family story. The positive news is that long-term recovery is alive and well. The Mitchells have members in recovery in all three current generations with over 50 collective years of sobriety. Bill Mitchell has been the leader in terms of helping to make a difference. The stores are proud employers of numerous associates in recovery.

The Mitchell family got involved with Shatterproof shortly after its founding. Russ Mitchell, Co-CEO of Mitchells Family Stores, currently serves on the Shatterproof board. The family is inspired by the tremendous progress Gary Mendell, founder and CEO of Shatterproof, has accomplished in such a short period of time.

The Mitchells have also been involved locally helping establish a college recovery program at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut.

We are grateful for your generous support of Shatterproof as we honor the Mitchell family.
