All I knew growing up was drugs and alcohol

I am six years sober thanks to MAT. I have been able to help so many women. My recovery has helped me find my passion and my voice. All I ever knew was drugs and alcohol growing up. Using was I guess ingrained in me. I used from age 14 to 29. What made me go into recovery was I found out I was pregnant. I wanted to do whatever I had to so my baby could have a chance. Going into withdraw while pregnant is very dangerous. I found that out the hard way. I was uneducated and thought I was doing what was best for her. When I was 21 weeks along her heart stopped beating. At 3:43am I woke up soooo sick. Cold sweats, nausea, vomiting, the works. This was the third time I had withdrawal like that pregnant with her. The third time was the absolute worst though. Around 3pm I had a check up to see how she was doing. They couldn't find her heart beat. She is the reason I stayed in recovery and followed the program. She is the reason I started Facebook's first support group for mothers on medication assisted treatment. I wanted to share our story and educate them so that they wouldn't have to experience the pain I did. The group has close to 1,500 members from all over the world.

Educate yourself on all types of recovery. Just because one way worked for you doesn't mean it will work for me. Don't give up hope for your loved one who is struggling and let them know you love them. Once I realized my family did love me and forgave me for all I had done wrong towards them, it made staying sober easier.
