Dry January: The Good, The Bad, and The In-Between

Dry January is a social trend during which people stop drinking alcohol for the first month of the year. While this idea has been around for decades, it was made official in 2014 by Alcohol Change UK, a nonprofit focused on reducing harm from alcohol.

How can Dry January be beneficial?

For moderate drinkers who don't have a substance use disorder, Dry January can be a nice way to jumpstart a healthy lifestyle in the new year.

As the popularity of sobriety challenges like Dry January increases, acceptance of non-drinkers increases too. When more people say "no, thanks" to alcohol without explanation, it removes the pressure of disclosing private information about addiction - which can be very stigmatizing.

But, can Dry January be harmful? The answer will surprise you.
