On October 14, 2018, over 3,000 walkers and runners gathered at Pier 84 in New York City for the community’s second annual Shatterproof Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run event. Participants united on the chilly but sunny morning to help transform treatment in America as well as celebrate recovery, honor lost loved ones, and walk or ran 5 kilometers to shatter the stigma of addiction.
Teams were full of excitement and decked out in matching t-shirts as they took selfies and posed for group photos in front of the Celebrity Recovery Wall. Supporters hugged one another and shared stories about what brought them to the event.
Families and friends gathered by the Memorial Gallery to read about their loved ones lost to addiction and add to their own contributions.
Participants also brought creative and heartfelt signs and posters to honor lost friends and relatives.
Many stopped by the Community Village to collect resources from several local organizations at the event. These groups are doing important work throughout the New York community to help families devastated by addiction.
Several companies sponsored the event, and we’re grateful for all their support and their commitment to saving lives by working with Shatterproof to put an end to the disease of addiction: Alkermes and Pacira – Plan Against Pain, Cigna, Indivior, and United Health Group, Adapt Pharma – Narcan Nasal Spray, Choice Hotels, Chubb, Dave & Buster’s, JP Morgan Chase, Kaleo, Lockton, Mariner Wealth Advisors, Tortoise, Vineyard Vines, Wyndham Hotels & Resorts. At 9 a.m., David Price, WNBC-TV Weathercaster, who served as the event emcee, got the crowd pumped up and ready for the speakers, which included Jessica Bruce, COO, NY/NJ Market at Cigna; Caroline Dixon, Shatterproof Ambassador; and Dr. Gregory Greco, Chairman of the Division of Plastic Surgery at Monmouth Medical Center, and Gary Mendell, Shatterproof CEO and Founder.
After the round of passionate speeches, the 5K portion of the event began at 9:30 a.m., with some members of the community walking and some running the 3.1 miles, but all crossing the finish line with the same goal in mind – rising up against addiction.
The New York community raised close to $700,000 for the Rise Up Against Addiction 5K Walk/Run event, which will support Shatterproof’s work to transform our nation’s broken addiction treatment system and ensure that every American with a substance use disorder has access to treatment that’s based on proven research.
