A message from our CEO
Shatterproof is dedicated to reducing the devastation the disease of addiction causes families. Our plan to attack this is simple: Operate our nonprofit like a business, with measurable results in saving lives .
2016 was the third calendar year of operations for Shatterproof. Including accomplishments already achieved in 2017, we have led successful advocacy campaigns in 15 states—from tightening requirements on prescribers of dangerous opioids to expanding access to the overdose-reversing medication naloxone. We expect these laws will save more than 1,000 lives every year. See accomplishments.
Shatterproof has also been active in federal policy. We were one of the lead advocates for the CDC Guideline on Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain . The Guideline was issued on March 15, 2016, and when fully implemented, it will save more than 10,000 lives every year. We also joined many other organizations to advocate for passage of the Comprehensive and Addiction Recovery Act and the $1 billion in funding that was included in the 21st Century Cures Act.
In November of 2016, with support from Cigna Foundation and CVS Health Foundation, Shatterproof launched the all-new shatterproof.org to serve as the premiere online resource for families, filled with information about the science of addiction, prevention, treatment, and recovery. All the content is peer-reviewed and evidence-based, while also being easy to read and presented on a user-friendly platform. The website is updated monthly and new features such as on-line communities, video content, enhanced treatment guidance, and advocacy toolkits will be added.
And our work continues. Thanks to a generous grant from United Healthcare Foundation, Shatterproof’s next initiative is launching parent support groups across the country. Shatterproof will be designing the content and operational structure for these groups through the end of this year and launching a pilot in 2018.
In early 2017, Shatterproof partnered with the National Safety Council and NORC at the University to Chicago to develop a tool for employers to see the cost of untreated substance use disorder to their companies. The tool also includes information on how to reduce these costs. Phase II, an educational program to allow companies to assess policies and practices to reduce these costs, and Phase III, a full-service program to assist companies in reducing these costs and creating recovery friendly workplaces, are currently in development, and will be released in January 2018, and January 2019, respectively (pilot of Phase III to begin in January 2018).
Shatterproof has clearly had an impact in communities across the United States in ending the unjust stigma of addiction. Through advocacy and grassroots events around the country, we’ll continue to have an impact nationally on ending stigma in the year to come.
Overall, 2016 was a year to be remembered. We ended the year in strong financial condition, with $2,624,409 in net assets. We have united over 100,000 Americans as donors, advocates, and followers. I believe it will be remembered as the year that this personal tragedy turned into hope for so many.
My warmest regards,
